In an inspiring example of precision, experience, and discipline, veteran trader Angelo Ciavarella, now affiliated with FundedNext, made headlines after winning a real-money trading competition that earned him a brand-new Porsche Boxster S.
The competition, held in the early 2000s and sponsored by a major bank, challenged participants to grow a €25,000 portfolio over four months. Out of hundreds of traders, Ciavarella emerged victorious, multiplying his capital tenfold and finishing with nearly €250,000 in equity—an extraordinary 1,000% return.
“I focused on high-beta stocks like STM Electronics,” Ciavarella shared in a recent interview with Risk to Reward Radio. “My strategy was based on an anti-Martingale system—scaling into winning trades instead of doubling down on losers. Discipline and adaptability were key.”
The competition offered two categories: derivatives and blue-chip stocks. Ciavarella chose stocks and applied a short-term, intraday approach using a combination of moving averages and correlation-based analysis. His performance not only beat hundreds of competitors but also highlighted a rarely achieved level of consistency and risk management in high-stakes trading.
The reward? A sleek, dark blue Porsche. Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived. Without traction control and caught in snowy weather, the car spun out and crashed just six months later. Ciavarella walked away uninjured, but the incident served as another lesson in the importance of risk awareness, on and off the trading floor.
Currently a university professor in London and an active trader with FundedNext, Ciavarella brings decades of market experience to the table. Starting his trading journey in 1999 during the dot-com boom, he has seen the evolution of markets and adapted accordingly.
“Markets change. Correlations break. Systems fail. You have to keep evolving,” Ciavarella emphasized. “What worked in 2003 won’t necessarily work in 2025. That’s why I always tell my students and fellow traders: Trade. Adjust. Repeat.”
Ciavarella also warns against the dangers of Martingale strategies, which he says lead most accounts to inevitable ruin. “Trading is not about gambling,” he adds. “It’s about discipline, psychology, and knowing when to adapt.”
